The Great Barrier Reef - Colorful Sea World
The sea is a mother of life, but people have insufficient knowledge about it. It remains mysterious, with an endless blue world that attracts people’s curious eyes. Though sea is a life source of everything, it keeps fading. Coral reefs can reflect this tragedy. When tourists go to Australia, they usually go to the Great Barrier Reef. In a wide variety of colorful sea world, a closed contact with sea creatures may change our attitude towards sea and even life.
In people’s minds, Australia is about enthusiastic nature, endless deserts, kangaroos that jump around, lazy koalas and the ocean kingdom of the Great Barrier Reef. Magnificent scenery of the Great Barrier Reef extends over 2,000 kilometers along the coast of Queensland, making it be the largest tropical coral reef system in the world. The sea opens its treasure to human beings. No matter if it’s in luxurious or economic way, people can explore the sea world in the Great Barrier Reef, like scuba diving, snorkelling, glass boat, jet ski, half submarines, sailing or even just a bird's-eye view of it. You can choose whatever you like.
Tourists tend to stay in Cairns if they go to the Great Barrier Reef because it is close to visit many tourist resorts. It becomes the first station for tourists to stay in. It takes one and half hours by ferry to go to the Great Barrier Reef. Usually, tourist will go back to Cairns after visiting the Great Barrier Reef on the same day, and then they will go to other tourist resorts. There are thousands of islands and different kinds of coral reefs. Therefor, many tourist resorts can be seen from the sky, land or sea, making it hard to introduce them all. Snorkelling will be introduced here.
Regarding my Great Barrier Reef trip, I went to Green Island and Moore Reef. It takes 45 minutes by ferry from Green Island to Cairns The water in Green Island is clear and shallow so Coral reefs can easily be seen, which is very beautiful. Local people, as well as tourists, will use fish food to attract the fish, which is great to take excellent photos. If their movement is strong and sudden, fish can even try to bite people, which is quite interesting. From Cairns or Airlie Beach, you can rent a boat to go to Moore Reef. Snorkelling in the water will allow you to go deeper in Moore Reef, creating a bigger distance with coral reefs. Its visual enjoyment is less than Green Island, however. Sometimes, tourists will find that many coral reefs have a bleaching phenomenon and its damage is more serious than people think.
Various tour activities in the Great Barrier Reef bring a lot of economic benefits to Australia. However, the consequence is direct and obvious. All kinds of damage lets the Great Barrier Reef fade away in a fast speed. People said that the number of current coral reefs is just half as much as its prime time. According to predictions, it will no longer exist after ten years Sadly, many creatures in the sea have the same fate as coral reefs. The protection from human being hardly offsets their damage to the sea, but it is right to make a change. The sea, a world we are not so familiar with, is beautiful but fragile, and might leave us some day.
Tourists traveling abroad usually send postcards to their families and friends as souvenirs, but you need to be careful here. Four postcards can cost over a hundred HK dollars. It is quite expensive.
Tourists who joined a tourist agency need to notice that 7-8 days tour expense costs around 1,500 HK dollars may seem cheap, but most activities like snorkelling comes at your own expense. When making a budget for traveling, tourists should keep these details into consideration.
In the Great Barrier Reef, tourists on boats will easily get seasick because of the big waves, so they need to prepare proper medicine just in case.
Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. It has opposite season. For example, winter comes in June. It’s two hours ahead than China in terms of time difference.
Coral is white itself and its color comes from the symbiotic algae in its body. Coral reef relies on micro symbiotic algae in its body. Algae provide energy to coral through photosynthesis. If the symbiotic algae dies, the coral will eventually turn white and die due to nutrition deficiencies. Compared to thirty years ago, the massive coral-bleaching phenomenon was quite rare, but it appears more and more in recent years.
